THE BREED
At Nanhoron we pride ourselves on our quality herd of both Original Population and Polled Hereford Cattle. Hailing from their namesake of Herefordshire the Original Population Herefords are a rare, single suckle, native UK breed known for their high yield of quality beef, hardiness, easy calving, docile nature and longevity - with cows having a long productive calving life. Polled Herefords were first bred in North America in the 1900’s and are very similar to their traditional counterparts with the exception of being hornless and larger. However, whilst the Polled Herefords maintain the same desirable traits as the Original Population Herefords, they have an improved growth rate with better conversion of grass to beef, with the focus on the modern bloodline meaning that they are constantly improving and are an ideal beef cattle breed. The hardiness of this breed allows us to calve outside, as the weather permits it, which is preferred by the farm as it is a much more hygienic environment for newborn calves. Our Hereford Cattle require little additional input in terms of concentrate food, as they graze extensively and thrive off of the grass here, with their grazing environment at Nanhoron encompassing mountain grazing down to lush river valleys, including the house’s historic parkland.
BREEDING
We hold a specific interest in our quality pedigree cattle. Through the use of cutting-edge breeding techniques, such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer, we are constantly improving our herd through the introduction and continuation of accredited and highly prized quality bloodlines. Many exciting programmes are currently in place, including sourcing quality bull semen internationally from top indexed bulls to be used for artificial insemination and similarly sourcing embryos of the same calibre for use in embryo transfers.

Laertes is in the top 5th percentile for shorter gestation periods as well as for milk, leaner rib fat and higher retail yield.

Mawarra Mustang is a Polled Hereford bull from Australia who was described by Matthew Rollanson of Genetics Support to be “one of the most complete polled bulls” with “faultless structure and locomotion”. However, his impressive appearance is hardly surprising when taking into consideration his Sire who won the 2012 Poll Hereford National Grand Champion in Australia and sold for $80,000.
